Getting Started

  • Is Breadcrumbs free?

Yes. Breadcrumbs is free to download and use on iOS and Android, with no time limit. A Pro tier unlocks video crumbs, 1 TB of cloud storage, higher-resolution photo uploads, more photos per crumb, and removes ads.

  • What is a crumb?

A crumb is a single stop on your travel map — a place you visited, with photos, notes, and an optional travel route from the previous stop. You can nest activity crumbs under a location crumb to capture what you did there (a hike, a restaurant, a museum) without cluttering your top-level map.

  • What platforms does Breadcrumbs support?

iOS 12 and later, and recent Android versions. There is no web client today — your map and crumbs live in the mobile app. Sign in on a new device with the same Google account to pick up where you left off.

  • How do I start tracking a trip?

After signing in, tap the + button to drop your first crumb. Pick a place — search by name, use your current GPS, or attach a photo and let Breadcrumbs read the location from its EXIF metadata. From your second stop onward, pick a travel mode (car, bus, train, plane, or boat) and Breadcrumbs draws the route back to your previous crumb automatically.

Account

  • How do I sign in?

Breadcrumbs uses Google or Apple sign in only. No passwords means there is nothing for an attacker to phish or leak, and you don’t have one more password to remember. Sign in with the same account on any device to access your map.

  • Does my data sync between devices?

Yes. Crumbs, photos, notes, and stats are stored on our servers and tied to your account. Sign in on another device and your full map appears.

  • How do I delete my account?

Open Settings → Delete Account. This triggers a server-side purge that:

    1. Deletes every photo and video from cloud storage
    2. Deletes your crumbs, profile, and aggregate stats from the database
    3. Revokes your authentication identity so the Google account can no longer sign back into the same data

Deletion is GDPR-compliant and cannot be reversed. Export your archive first if you want a copy.

Data & Privacy

  • Is my map private?

Yes. There are no public feeds, no followers, and no way for anyone else to view your map. Breadcrumbs is a personal journal — your trips stay yours. Cloud storage is private to your account, and media URLs are short-lived signed links that only your signed-in app can fetch.

  • Can I export my data?

Yes. Settings → Export my archive builds a complete archive of every crumb (JSON), every photo and video at original quality, and a browsable index.html you can open in any web browser. When it’s ready you’ll get an email with a download link — no need to keep the app open.

Exports are rate-limited to one per 24 hours. A large archive can take from a few minutes to several hours to build.

  • What location data does Breadcrumbs collect?

Only the locations you explicitly attach to a crumb. Location comes from one of three sources, all triggered by you:

    • A photo’s EXIF metadata when you attach one
    • A Mapbox search when you pick a place by name
    • Your current GPS when you tap “use my location”

Breadcrumbs does not track you in the background, does not log your movements, and does not sell location data to anyone.

Pro

  • How much does Breadcrumbs Pro cost?
    • $6.99 / month
    • $39.99 / year — saves about $44 vs. monthly
    • $99 lifetime — launch special (normally $149)

Billing is handled by the App Store or Google Play. Cancel anytime from your platform’s subscription settings.

  • What does Pro unlock?
    • Video crumbs — attach videos, not just photos
    • 1 TB cloud storage for your photos and videos
    • Higher upload quality — up to 12 MB per photo (free tier: 2 MB )
    • Up to 100 photos per crumb (free tier: 5)
    • No ads in the breadcrumb carousel
    • Priority support — Pro bug reports and feedback are flagged for faster review

Free users keep core map, crumb, and journal features forever — Pro adds capacity and quality on top.

  • What happens if I cancel Pro?

Your data stays put. Every crumb, photo, and video you have already uploaded remains accessible — we never delete content because a subscription lapsed.

New uploads after the lapse revert to free limits (5 photos per crumb, 2 MB per photo, no video). 30 days after cancellation all images are converted to 2mb.

  • How does the 1 TB Pro storage work?

Pro includes 1 TB (1,024 GB) of cloud storage shared across your photos and videos. If a new upload would push you over the cap, that upload is paused and we flag it in your queue — deleting crumbs or media frees space immediately, then queued uploads resume.

Free users are capped to 2 GB total storage.

Technical

  • Does Breadcrumbs work offline?

Not currently. We are planning a future update to allow offline creation of crumbs that will queue and sync once internet connection is returned. At this time too many features are tied directly to online services like the map, geocoding, etc.

  • How does Breadcrumbs handle my photos?

When you attach a photo to a crumb, Breadcrumbs reads its EXIF metadata to pre-fill the location and date — so a phone photo taken at a viewpoint already knows where it was.

Photos are compressed to your tier’s size cap before upload (free: 2 MB, Pro: up to 12 MB, adjustable in Settings), then stored privately in our cloud and encrypted in transit. The original on your phone is never modified.

  • How are routes drawn between crumbs?

It depends on the travel mode you set on each crumb:

    • Car, bus, train — Breadcrumbs uses Mapbox routing to draw the realistic road or rail path between your previous crumb and the new one.
    • Plane, boat — a straight line. Actual flight paths and shipping lanes aren’t meaningful on a personal travel map.

You can change a crumb’s travel mode any time; the route redraws automatically.

  • How do I report a bug or send feedback?

Inside the app: Settings → Send Feedback (text-only) or Settings → Report a Bug (lets you annotate a screenshot before sending). Both go straight to our triage queue. Pro accounts are flagged for priority review.
